SWAMPDOGS Rugby Union NT Inc was formed in 1986, the primary aim of the club is the development of rugby union through training and coaching .The Club currently fields seven teams from under 5’s through to the under 17’s.
2010 will hopefully see a B Grade team come together with a good mix of past and present club members. The Northern Territory Darwin Competition, games are played at Austar Park in Marrara on Friday evenings for juniors and on Saturday for seniors.
In 2008 six out of seven teams played finals Rugby with the under 14 team taking out the 2008 Minor Premiership, beating Palmerston 31-12.The skills and teamwork displayed was a great credit to all players and coaches.
2009 saw many of our players being selected to represent the Northern Territory and School Sport NT in interstate competitions , this was a great indication of the amount of talent we have at all levels within the club.
The club promotes rugby values of team spirit, and sportsmanship while striving to provide quality, safe rugby in a fun family atmosphere. All players, families, and supporters have the opportunity to form strong friendships, develop their confidence and leadership skills, and nuture a sense of belonging and pride.
The club actively encourages maximum participation by all members, and the dedicated volunteers are testament to this, giving their time freely to encourage young people in the rural area to embrace the game of rugby union.
One of our Committee members was awarded the 2008 NT Rugby Union Volunteer of the year , and then named Australian Rugby Union Volunteer of the year at the John Eales Medal Presentation Dinner held in Sydney on 23rd October 2008.
The Swampdogs home ground and training venue is at Fred’s Pass reserve and we currently share the area with another user group.
In 2008 the Fred’s Pass Board granted the Swampdogs an undeveloped piece of land within Fred’s Pass Reserve .
The Swampdogs committee are excited by the opportunities that will arise from the club being allocated it’s own playing area and a new grounds development sub committee has been set up to over see the project .The prospect of a Bushland Plot becoming the home of the “SWAMPDOGS” is just fantastic for everyone involved in the game players, families, volunteers and sponsors alike.
2009 presented many new opportunities for Fundraising and all club members embraced the challenge , we as a club were able to raise over $20,000.00 which was a terrific effort considering the size of our club and rural location. All teams have current sponsorship 2009/2010 season and we were able to secure our first major facility sponsors Bendigo Bank Coolalinga and MacMahon.
As we begin our 2010 season our focus will be on developing the new grounds. Thanks to the commitment of various individuals and with the support of the Fred’s Pass Board ,15 acres of Bushland has already been cleared. The first of the rugby fields and club house area will be surveyed early in 2010; the development is set to take place over the next two to five years.
Early planning will begin in 2010 as we decide how best to celebrate our 25th Anniversary in 2011.To cememorate this special occassion we hope to have all teams sponsored so we can provide special playing jerseys ,and we will also sell club Polo shirts to reflect this achievement.
